The beautiful Italian Cervinia ski resort Cervinia lays just on the border of Switzerland and Italy. The place is worth visiting just because of the breathtaking panoramas of Matterhorn, Val d'Aosta valley and Mont Blanc, and excellent ski slopes just make an extra benefit.
The slopes are of moderate difficulty, very long and wide, with the inevitable view of the Matterhorn. Beginners will be very pleased with a large selection of blue runs, baby lifts and gondolas, which will encourage them in making first curves in the snow. Well prepared slopes, good quality of snow and long runs will help medium skilled skiers in improving their technique. Advanced skiers could start to feel a bit bored after some time, but they can entertain themselves on more challenging slopes of nearby Zermatt, the Swiss ski resort with which Cervinia is linked. Glaciers at the top of Cervinia and Zermatt allow skiing during the whole summer.Cervinia is an ideal place for snowboarders and freestylers. There are 2 snowparks: the famous Indian Park, considered one of the best parks in Italy, and Gravity Park, a summer park at the top of the glacier, moved to the lower part of Zermatt during winter.
Cervinia has 129 km of ski slopes; 30% of the number is for beginners, 60% for intermediate skiers and 10% for experts. The ski area is covered by an abundance of modern ski lifts: 13 chairlifts, 13 T-bar lifts and 7 gondolas. Since the resort is set very high in the mountains (from 1524 m to 3883 m), snow guns cover only 25% of the total number of ski slopes, and it mainly refers to the runs leading to the village of Cervinia.
For those heading for other outdoor activities, Cervinia offers cross country skiing, golf, jet-sledding, kite skiing, snowshoeing… Heliskiing is a great way of spending the day - you can admire beautiful mountains and enjoy virgin snow at the same time. This is one of the few resorts where you must carry a passport since you can cross the state border with your skis on. Passport checks are very often and numerous signs warn you on crossing the border. Fines for not having a passport are very high! Daily skipass for adults costs EUR 36, while international version (valid also for the slopes of Zermatt) costs 50 euros.
Accommodation is a bit expensive. The cheapest accommodation in the village, bed and breakfast in a two-star hotel, is around EUR 40 while a star more doubles the price. We recommend choosing the accommodation in the small villages around Cervinia. The food in the restaurants is excellent and affordable. Of course, the huts on the slopes are more expensive than places in the village. Cervinia is a place for jet-set who will not mind reserving a table at the restaurant at the top of the mountain months ahead.
The only disadvantages of Cervinia would be stairs on main gondolas, often strong winds and very high prices.
