The Stubai Glacier is located at the end of the Stubai valley, 40 km southwest of Innsbruck. The place covered in eternal snow and ice that still defies global warming, guarantees snow cover on the ski pistes until July. It makes an ideal destination for active holidays in late spring, especially for the fact that the days are longer and more beautiful.
According to official brochures, the Stubai resort has 110 km of ski pistes. Realistically speaking, this figure is slightly lower (about 90 km). However, it is still enough to make Stubai the largest glacier resort in Austria. The trails are descending from 3.200 to 2.300 m above sea level. Abount 40 km are marked as blue, 35 km are red, and more experienced skiers have about 10 km of black ski trails at their disposal. The trails No. 1, 7, and 10 are worth mentioning; they are wide, sunbathed slopes of a mild descent, suitable for beginners and those who want to work on their technique. Trails No. 9 and 11 are also worth a mention; they are almost as mild as the blue runs that descend parallel to them, but are marked as red due to their steeper part at the end. It is not possible to reach the valley on skis, at least not following the groomed runs. The slopes spread to the station of the two cabin lifts that transport skiers to the glacier. The runs are very well prepared; you'll find them immaculately groomed each morning. Central runs on the glacier are covered with modern cabin ski lift and hooded chair lifts, while the peripheral runs are covered by anchor lifts. Once on the slopes, you will no longer need your ski lift pass; there are no checkpoints on the lifts.
The heart of the resort is situated on 2620 m of altitude in Gamsgarten area. There you'll find two restaurants with large terraces, Intersport store, ski service, ski school, kindergarten on the snow and 'classical' kindergarten, ski depot, an ice cliff for climbing, a snow tube run...Above Gamsgarten you'll find an excellent snow park with a ski cross run and various elements. Also, there is a set up race course and a race course where you can measure your speed, both open for skiers. Children will enjoy kindergarten on the snow, where a hooded magic carpet will take them uphill. The off-piste skiers' interests were also considered on this resort; 17 km of runs are labeled off-piste. One of these runs will take you all the way to the valley, as well as 4.5 km cross country skiing runs.
If you visit the resort in spring, you can go cycling through the Stubai valley, as well as hiking, horseback riding, or simply take a rest on some of the green meadows alongside a clear mountain stream. The valley is abundant with typical picturesque Austrian villages (Schönberg, Mieders, Fulpmes, Neustift…) offering accommodation for every taste and pocket, as well as the services such as sports equipment maintenance or shopping. As for the food and beverages prices, they are quite reasonable: beer is EUR 2, main course is available at EUR 7, salad is EUR 2-4, germknödel is EUR 5 , and coffee is EUR 2.
You can purchase the ski lift pass in the office at the bottom of the initial ski lift. Soon, this will be the site of a huge terminal with all the services skiers and snowboarders can think of. Six day ski lift pass in high season (up to May 1) is EUR 182.60, and in low season (in May) you can get it at the price of EUR 151.90. Children under 10 years of age and accompanied by parents ski for free. You can also purchase the Stubai Super Skipass that is valid for skiing on the neighboring, smaller resorts in the valley, such as Schlick 2000 (21 km of ski pistes) or Mieders (7 km of ski pistes). Bear in mind, these are opend only during winter months.
